Geospatial modeling of water supply distribution system: A case study of Dehradun city, India

Abstract Water utilities form the core part of any urban infrastructure. A spatial database water distribution system (WDS) for Dehradun city has been created in a geographic information (GIS) environment, while drawing data inputs from diverse sources and supply-demand gap analysis performed. Environmental Protection Agency Network (EPANET, 2.0) used to analyze WDS explore its reliability current future scenarios. Mapping existing 564 km long network revealed that more than three-quarters outdated pipelines. An accuracy 93% pipe diameter estimation obtained upon validation by ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey. confirmed although surplus supply, it suffers scarcity, mainly due unsatisfactory condition WDS. Twenty-seven percent pipes are smaller prescribed standards; there is an undesirable practice direct pumping tube wells into storage tanks required at least 29 locations network. 24-hour extended period EPANET simulation helped identify areas where supply experienced very low or negative pressure.
